Brenda and Michael- A Love Story

Wedding Session- May 28, 2017

“Love is old, love is new, love is all, love is you.” — The Beatles

It’s been a while. Yes, I know- eeeek. I have, however, had the pleasure to photograph the beautiful wedding of a totally bad*ss couple and I’m going to share some of my favorite shots of the day/night. The wedding and reception both took place at The Hotel Derek which allowed for a fun, festive, and eclectic celebration.

I’ve known Brenda since we were kids- we used to swim competitively together and she is the reason why I have a crazy (not so) little puppy these days 😉 She is quite possibly one of the sweetest, most friendly, and happy person I have known. It took ten years for our couple to make it to this day but it was well worth the wait. The stories their family and friends told about them were tear inducing and oh-so sweet.

Quite possibly the best part was their doxies were the flower girl and ring bearer. Super cute, huh? I know, right!! And, on top of that, our couple’s other dog was a prominent subject in Brenda’s bridal portraits (that will be another blog post, so stay tuned). Here are some highlights from the wedding session, enjoy:

Brenda and Michael opted for the First Look so we set up Michael and Maxwell like this, while Brenda and Reesie came down the hall.

And then he saw his bride…

Seriously, could you have even planned for a better reaction??

“Listen, do you want to know a secret? Do you promise not to tell? Closer, let me whisper in your ear, say the words you long to hear: I’m in love with you.” — The Beatles

And then of course there were the doxies.

Maxwell the ring bearer extraordinaire and Reesie the pita bread stealing flower girl.

The reception was gorgeously put together by the hotel and Inventive Events. Every last detail was tailored for Brenda and Michael. I loved the color scheme Brenda picked out- the muted green and pink really went well together.

“How could I dance with another when I saw you standing there?” — The Beatles

And then as if their day could get any better- it did.

Four words: The Fab 5 Band. These guys were an AMAZING Beatles cover band and let me tell you, they did NOT disappoint! They were a surprise for Michael’s mother who is a HUGE Beatles fan. They played several sets and they all got everyone on the dance floor each time.

They even gained The Beatles a new fan.

Congratulations Brenda and Michael! Thank you for letting me document your love story and big day. I wish you nothing but the best and a life full of warm hearts and wet noses. XO – Diana

PS. I’ll give you one guess as to what music I listened to while writing this blog post 😉

Fun at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

“A visit to a museum is a search for beauty, truth, and meaning in our lives. Go to museums as often as you can.” –Maira Kalman

Today’s visit to HMNS was spur of the moment, sparked by a car accident and the opportunity to entertain my little guy. We were driving on 59, approaching 610, when my Waze app notified me there was an accident ahead. Sure enough, the traffic to get onto the Loop from 59 was ridiculous so I suggested we go to the museum. It was early in the morning still, I think before 9:30 am so I knew it would be a perfect time to visit.

I pulled into the parking lot off of Hermann Park Circle and actually found a spot immediately! Those of you who are familiar with parking at the zoo and the museum district know how amazing that is. So, little man and I walked the short walk to HMNS and spent about an hour or so inside. Here are some highlights from our walk around the museum (side note: all photos were taken with my iPhone):

“Nobody ever flunked a science museum.”  –Frank Oppenheimer

First stop was, of course, the dinosaurs. We went around several times because little man HAD to see his very favorite, T Rex. He think they are the coolest and will tell anyone who will listen that T Rex is his favorite. We looked at  dozens of other fossils and bones (with little man giving new names to some of them: slothasaurus, turtleasaurus, etc.)

We moved on the the Texas Wildlife Cabinet Curiosities which was pretty cool. They had dozens of drawers you could open to see different treasures hidden inside. This one was one of my favorites: different bird eggs. Little man wanted to know if he could open them (he LOVES opening Easter egg and surprise eggs).

“If you think museums are boring, you’re doing it wrong.”

Next up was the gemstone and mineral exhibit which was gorgeous. I’m a sucker for anything sparkly. By this time there were approximately 9,436 school kids of all ages taking tours with their teachers and chaperones. So, to get out of the craziness we went to what ended up being my favorite exhibit.

“His life was one long extravaganza, like living inside a Fabergé egg.” –John Lahr

I wish I had had my Canon or my Sony because these displays were nothing short of incredible. The photos here don’t do them justice. There were picture frames, opera glasses, cigarette cases, pendants, figurines- all decked out in diamonds and gold.

(That blue tiara…….drool).

Quite possibly the most interesting piece was this elephant, which is on loan to HMNS by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It’s a “surprise” piece as there is a key which upon insertion will cause the elephant to walk and move its head. Just at a quick glance it looks like a regular plastic toy when in reality it is made of ivory, gold, diamonds, and a few other materials. Such a quaint little item!

Senior Portrait Session- February 26, 2017

“Let new adventures begin.”

I have been gushing over this session since it happened! The camera fell in love with this gorgeous senior and she knew how to work it for the camera. I told her to just be herself and her intoxicating personality came out. Her incredible smile lit up nearly every photo!

The day we shot these photos it was pretty mild- warm, but very breezy- but not super hot like it had been the previous weekend. The overcast clouds and breezy day added to the atmosphere of the photo shoot. Here are some highlights from our recent senior portrait session:

“She leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes.”

We had quite a fun time walking around the museum district looking for spots to snap photos. She told me about her desire to go to the University of Houston to study business although she still hadn’t officially chosen her school just yet.

“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”                                                                                                                                                                                                       –Rachel Zoe

She was initially unsure of what to wear so I gave her a few suggestions and she hit it out of the park! I love her style- edgy but feminine. She has a great eye for color and couldn’t have chosen better for our location!

I would jump at the chance to do another photo session with her! She was so comfortable in front of the lens and it definitely showed in the photos. Her smile was natural, as was the sparkle in her eye. I also enjoyed doing an urban shoot which was out of the norm for me but totally fun!

Family Session- February 18, 2017

“This is our happily ever after.”

This family photo shoot was such a blast! The kids were so easy going and ready to smile- Mom and Dad were so great to work with as well. I actually have known Mom since elementary school- so it was a super mini reunion!

As I mentioned before, our winter has been nearly nonexistent and this day was no exception. It was over 80 degrees when we shot these photos- which makes for a laid back session but not a good winter!! Here are some highlights from our recent family session:

img_2723-watermark“She was always thinking outside of the box, breaking rules, and only following what her heart told her was right.”
                                                                                                    — Shannon A. Thompson, November Snow

This spunky little girl is going to be a heart breaker when she gets older. She’s smart and cute- and she knows it 🙂 but at the same time, you can see the kindness and love she has inside. She was such a pleasure to photograph!

“Once upon a time, there was a boy. He lived in a village that no longer exists, in a house that no longer exists, on the edge of a field that no longer exists, where everything was discovered, and everything was possible. A stick could be a sword, a pebble could be a diamond, a tree, a castle.”                                                                                                                            –Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

Oh brother!! I got such a kick out of this cute boy! He had the perfect personality to offset his sister and you could see it in his eyes. He’s not a fan of kisses at the moment but he is very interested in sticks of all shapes and sizes 🙂

img_2783-watermark

img_2773-watermark

Both sister and brother were full of smiles and “cheese.” It was impossible to NOT get adorable photos! They were very intrigued by the lake- there was a man fishing out golf balls and he let them try it on their own! It was fun watching them explore the outdoors and get attached to certain sticks!

“Surround yourself with those that make you happy.”

img_2788-watermarkI’m so glad I had this opportunity to photograph a childhood friend and her adorable family. We told her daughter that we’ve known each other since elementary school and it was such a kick to see her little face try to comprehend the fact that her mom was once a little kid 🙂 I am excited to watch the kids grow up (but not too fast!)

Wedding Session- January 28, 2017

“Grow old with me, the best is yet to be.”

Today I am sharing some stunning images from Laksany and Daniel’s wedding day. They are a fun couple who met through work 16 years ago and decided to tie the knot this year.

Our winter in Southeast Texas has been very mild but, of course, on their wedding day it was downright chilly and windy! Poor Laksany took it like a champ in her beautiful wedding dress and we captured some amazing photos despite the cold. Here are some highlights from our recent wedding session:

img_1877-watermarkThe most exciting thing was the surprise the bride and groom had for their families.

They are expecting a sweet baby boy but nobody but the two of them and I knew that! Daniel and Laksany planned the big reveal at the reception hosted at Tradicao Brazilian Steakhouse.

dsc01209-watermarkThis was the moment their families learned they were going to be grandparents (and uncle!). This moment was full of emotion- everyone was so excited! There were lots of tears, hugs, kisses, and pure happiness. Inside each of the boxes was a small blue shoe and ultrasound photos.

dsc01313-watermarkCongratulations Daniel and Laksany! I wish you and your sweet boy a beautiful life filled with joy and happy memories. XO – Diana

I adore nature.

I am so lucky I get to take pictures of Mother Earth in all her glory. These pictures were taken in New Mexico and I so much wish I could take clients there to do photo sessions. I always think of the east coast when it comes to fall foliage but New Mexico blew me away.

These were taken in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. I’d go back in a heartbeat. I don’t know what it is about these places but they’re calming and peaceful in a fast paced world.
